What a beautiful river!

Number of Fish:
4
Species: High-Altitude Bluegill
Pattern used: #12 Copper Copper John
Location: Cherry Lake, Stanislaus National Forest

Fished Cherry Lake for about an hour and a half from my kayak this morning. Took four high altitude bluegill in a small cove near the boat ramp on a # 12 Copper John on a floating line. Fish were in about 9 feet of water, so I used a extra long leader.

Summary:
Fished with my Dad from 1:00PM to about 6:00PM. Water flows were very low but fishing was quite productive. We caught and released 64 beautiful rainbow trout between us. Mostly dry takes, but caught a bunch on the dropper as well. We were the only fisherman on the water. The wading and moving along the stream can be tough. It's pretty rocky. Watch your step! Great stream. If you go please catch and release!

My first time fishing this little gem of the Sierra gold county. There's no better way to celebrate my son Sean's 40th birthday than to be fishing together. It's great to fish with one of my best fishing buddies (the other best buddy is my son Darin) while "leap-frogging" from one productive pool of pocket water to another. I've had occassions where I fished alone, but nothing beats being with your best fishing buddies.

Results: Two rainbows 14" and 12"
Method: Two fly nymph rig and caught both fish on the bottom fly, #16 bead head Prince Nymph.
Location: On highway 4 just north of the of the hwy 89 split.
Fishing was unexpectedly slow this afternoon, even when I switched to my dry-dropper set-up, which was successful on the 13th. After catching the two fish within the first 45 minutes I expected a more productive afternoon. Guess I should have caught the two fish and then taken a nap!

Results: Four rainbows, 8 to 12" and one brown 15".
Method: Dry, royal stimulator #14 and dropper #18, bead head green sparkle emerger.
Location: I fished the section just about the highway 89 and 4 split. This section is known to hold large stocked rainbows up to 27", but competeing with spin casters intent on "taking fish" is a challenge at times. The river below the bridge just east of Marleeville is restricted to catch and release single barbless hooks only. Having fished that area on a previous trip I know that it can be productive also. I recommend that a visit to the Tahoe Flyfishing Outfitters in S. Lake Tahoe for the latest info and river conditions.

Species:  Rainbow trout
Size:  12 inches
Effective flies:  #12, brown wooley bugger

Summary:  Didn't have a lot of time today so I made a quick trip to the Mokelumne River below Camanche Dam.  I fished from below the hatchery for about a mile maybe.  i was there for about three hours and hooked a few and managed to land one about twelve inches in length using a brown wooley bugger size #12-14.  Flows are still pretty high and it's the middle of July.  They are still releasing alot of water due to the abudant snow snow in the higher elevations.  One last note:  I thought I ran into Sean Wallentine! but it was a gentleman who was the spitin' image of him.

Date: Monday, December 21, 2009
# of Fish Caught: 4
Species: Rainbow Trout
Size: 19", 21", 22", 22"
Effective Flies: #22 Killer (pea**** hurl head and red chenille body/tail)

Summary:
Fished alone from 8am to 1pm. Weather was great. It was about 50 degrees, foggy in the morning, mostly cloudy with no wind. It started getting breezy and began raining at 1pm when I called it quits.

Water flows were good, about 100 cfs is my best guess. Regular winter lows. The fish were very active. I fished below the campground at a place called "the point."

I used 6lb flourocarbon tippet and a very small (#22) midge called a "Killer." It as no bead, a pea**** hurl head and a body/tail of red chenille.

It was important to use the stronger tippet because I caught some big fish. Landed four fish that were 19", 21", and two 22-inch Rainbows.

Great day on the creek!

Coffee Creek (Trinity County, California)
Date: Sunday, July 26, 2009
# of Fish Caught: 17
Species: Rainbow Trout
Size: Up to 11"
Effective Flies: #10 Royal Stimulator with droppers including #14 Prince Nymph and red Copper John droppers

Summary
For most of the details of this location and day of fishing see Sean's report below; no need to submit duplicate info.

I have always enjoyed secluded mountain streams with the constant sounds of the water and cooperative native fish. Coffee Creek is one of those special places. Sometimes those special places hold surprises too.

Toward the end of the day I was fishing the left side of the stream while Sean was fishing the right. We were in a sort of zone; catching a releasing numerous small fish. As I was moving up to the next pocket my foot slipped off of a rock with a thud and instantly there was a loud shoreline rattle; a short rattle in time but loud nonetheless. It took me a moment to gather my attention and at the same time Sean said, "what was that?"
"It sounded like a rattlesnake," I responded. Then looking to my left, sure enough there he was slithering along the bank away from me. Needless to say, our fishing was interrupted while we photographed and filmed it. In thirty years of fishing this is only my second encounter with a rattler. The first was along Deep Creek in the Lake Arrowhead area of Southern California.

So, be careful and alert when entering and exiting the water there are more native creatures than just the fish.

Body of Water:
Lake Davis, CA (Plumas County near Portola)
Date: Saturday, August 15, 2009
# of Fish Caught: 1
Species: Rainbow Trout
Size: 14"
Effective Flies: #14 Blood Midge

Summary:
My first time on Lake Davis. Fished with some friends. Fishing was slow. Among us we only caught 6 fish. While fish were hitting the surface, the fish we caught were on streamers with droppers and sink tip line.

We fished the west side of the lake using pontoon boats. We took a dirt road down the water's edge a little north of the boat launch.

I actually saw several mature blood midges on the surface (stunningly beautiful adult fly; soft white wings and red body). I also saw brown damsel flies swimming near the surface. There were several adult damsels flying around. Mayflies were abundant and there were caddis as well.

Lake Davis has been very controversial due to some rogue idiot who has twice planted Northern Pike in the lake. The state and feds have both killed the lake twice now. The Pike seem to be gone...for now.

For more on Lake Davis do a Google search or check out this link for general information:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Davis,_California

Body of Water:
Coffee Creek (Trinity County, California)
Date: Sunday, July 26, 2009
# of Fish Caught: 27
Species: Rainbow Trout
Size: Up to 11"
Effective Flies: #10 Royal Stimulator with droppers including #14 Dark Lord and Prince Nymph droppers

Summary:

My dad and I fished some new water: Coffee Creek, CA. This stream feeds the upper Trinity River north of Trinity Lake (formerly known as Clair Engle Lake) in Trinity County. It's about an hour drive north of Lewiston, which is approximately 30 miles west of Redding in California's northern Central Valley.

From California's Highway 3 we drove 6 miles west (upsrtream) along Coffee Creek Road. This classic, icy cold freestone stream has beautiful plunge pools and runs. It is filled with stunning natural Rainbow Trout.

Fishing a dry/dropper combination (#10 Stimulator with #16/18 Copper John, Dark Lord or Prince Nymph Droppers) we got strikes on nearly every cast. While the fish were small, topping out at 11 inches, they were active all day and fought hard.

Together we brought more than 40 fish to hand. The wading was a little tough and it was very hot (at least 90). Dad was nearly struck by a 5 foot rattlesnake. I heard the snake rattle from across the stream. It made me realize how loud a rattler rattles. I couldn't hear my dad yell from across the roaring stream but I heard that rattle loud and clear! Of course, we had to get a closer look.

If you like catching fish all day long in a pretty mountain setting (with an occasional rattlesnake), then give Coffee Creek a try if you ever find yourself in the area. I wouldn't come all the way to California just to fish Coffee Creek, but if you find yourself fishing Steelhead or Salmon in the Trinity River and need a small stream diversion, Coffee Creek's a perfect destination.

Size: Up to 13"
Effective Flies: #12 Prince Nymph, #16 BH Green Rock Worm, #16 Red Copper John

Summary:

Fished at Bucktail Access in the late morning. The Copper Johns worked best in this area. Then we moved up into the "fly fishing only" section in Lewiston. We fished above the old concrete diversion dam and had pretty good success using the green rock worm.

It was very hot; sunny. Water was clear and cold. Again we saw some very large salmon swirling. Used the hinged indicator technique.

The fish were not big but they were a lot of fun. At about 2:30pm my dad and I agreed it was just too darn hot.

Flies Used: Stimulator, Red Copper John, Olive/Black Woolly Bugger.
Other Details: Fished the North Fork of the Feather River at the bridge at Seneca Road downstream from Lake Almanor in the morning from 9am till 11am. Access was really tough and the water was really stained due to a lot of rain. After lunch, fished Indian Creek just upstream from Indian Falls. Again, constant rain and temp's in the 40's  to low 50's made conditions really tough, especially for a beginner fly fisherman. Just as I was getting ready to call it quits and head back to camp, I hooked my first fish on any kind of stream. I'm pretty  sure it is a mountain whitefish. Not a trout like I was hoping for, but I will take it!
